Signs Your Debt Has Become a Problem
Debt problems often creep up gradually. If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to seek help.
Check your optionsYou can only afford minimum payments
Paying minimums means debt takes years to clear and costs much more in interest.
You use credit to pay bills
Using cards or overdrafts for essentials means your debt is growing, not shrinking.
You avoid opening post or answering calls
Avoiding creditors is a sign the situation feels out of control.
You lie to family about money
Hiding debt from loved ones adds to stress and isolation.
Debt keeps you awake at night
Financial worry affecting your sleep and health is a serious warning sign.
You have no savings for emergencies
Any unexpected cost means more borrowing and deeper debt.
There Are Solutions
Whatever your situation, there are ways to deal with debt. Here are some options that could help.

Questions About Debt Help
Find answers to common questions people have when struggling with debt.
What should I do if I'm struggling with debt?
The first step is to not ignore it. Debt problems rarely go away on their own and usually get worse. Start by listing all your debts and what you pay each month. Then work out what you can realistically afford. If you cannot cover minimum payments, seek free debt advice as soon as possible. There are solutions available, and the earlier you act, the more options you have.
Where can I get free debt help?
There are several places to get free debt advice in the UK. Charities like StepChange and Citizens Advice offer free support. You can also get free advice from regulated debt solution providers like us. We can assess your situation and explain all your options without any obligation. Never pay for debt advice when free help is available.
Can I get help if I can't pay my debts?
Yes, absolutely. There are several debt solutions designed specifically for people who cannot afford their current payments. An IVA lets you pay what you can afford for 60 months, then remaining debt is written off. A Debt Management Plan reduces your payments to affordable levels. Even if you have very little income, a Debt Relief Order may be an option.
Will debt stress affect my health?
Debt stress can have real effects on your physical and mental health. Studies show that people with debt problems are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. The good news is that taking action to address your debt can significantly reduce this stress. Many people feel immediate relief just from speaking to an advisor and understanding their options.
Should I ignore debt if I can't pay?
No. Ignoring debt is one of the worst things you can do. Debts will grow as interest and charges are added. Creditors can take further action including CCJs, bailiffs, or attachment of earnings. It also increases your stress. Instead, contact your creditors to explain your situation or seek debt advice to understand your options.
What happens if I stop paying my debts?
If you stop paying, creditors will first send letters and calls. Then they may pass your debt to a collection agency, add charges, or take you to court for a CCJ. After a CCJ, they can send bailiffs or take money from your wages. Your credit score will also be badly affected. Getting help before this happens gives you more control.
Can I negotiate with creditors myself?
You can try, but it can be stressful and creditors may not take you seriously. They often accept better terms through a formal debt solution or debt advice company. If you have multiple debts, negotiating with each one separately is time consuming. A Debt Management Plan or IVA lets a professional handle all negotiations for you.
Is there government help for debt?
The government does not directly pay off debts, but there are official schemes that can help. Debt Relief Orders write off debts under £30,000 if you have very low income. Breathing Space gives you 60 days protection from creditors while you get advice. Bankruptcy is also a legal process that can write off most debts. Free debt advice can help you access these.
