How to Stop Creditor Calls

There are several ways to stop creditors contacting you. Here they are, from least to most effective.

Write to creditors

Temporary

Request they contact you only in writing. They should respect this, but the debt remains.

This stops calls but does not address the underlying debt. Creditors can still take legal action.

Debt Management Plan

Good

Your DMP provider becomes your point of contact. Creditors deal with them, not you.

Most creditors will stop calling once you have a DMP in place, though it is not legally binding.

Individual Voluntary Arrangement

Complete

An IVA legally prohibits all creditor contact. They must stop all communication by law.

This is the only solution that legally forces creditors to stop. Once approved, contact must cease.

The Legal Solution

How an IVA Stops Creditor Contact

An IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) is the only debt solution that legally forces creditors to stop all contact. Once your IVA is approved, creditors are bound by law to communicate only through your Insolvency Practitioner.

  • No more phone calls
  • No more letters or emails
  • No visits to your home
  • Legally binding protection
  • Plus remaining debt written off

How do I stop creditors from calling me?

There are several ways to stop creditor calls: You can write to them asking them to communicate only in writing. You can enter a Debt Management Plan where your provider handles all creditor contact. Or you can enter an IVA, which legally prohibits creditors from contacting you. The most effective and permanent solution is a formal arrangement like an IVA.

Is it harassment if debt collectors keep calling?

Frequent calls can be considered harassment under FCA guidelines. Debt collectors should not call excessively, at antisocial hours (before 8am or after 9pm), or in a way that causes distress. If you feel harassed, you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman. However, the most effective way to stop calls is to address the underlying debt through a formal solution.

Can creditors call me at work?

Creditors should generally avoid calling your workplace unless you have given permission or they have no other way to contact you. If creditor calls at work are causing problems, you can write to them requesting they do not call you at work. Entering an IVA stops all creditor contact including to your workplace.

What are my rights with debt collectors?

You have the right to be treated fairly. Debt collectors must not harass you, use threatening behaviour, contact you at unreasonable times, discuss your debt with others, or misrepresent themselves. They must provide written confirmation of the debt if requested. FCA regulations protect you from unfair collection practices.

Can I tell creditors to stop calling?

Yes, you can write to creditors asking them to contact you only in writing. They should respect this request. However, this does not stop the debt or prevent them from taking other action like court proceedings. For a complete and legally binding stop to all contact, you need a formal debt solution like an IVA.

What happens if I ignore debt collectors?

Ignoring debt collectors does not make the debt go away. They may escalate to legal action, obtain a CCJ (County Court Judgment), or instruct bailiffs. The debt may also be sold to another collection agency who will start contacting you again. It is better to seek debt advice and find a solution that addresses the underlying problem.

Can debt collectors contact my family?

Debt collectors should not discuss your debt with family members or contact them to pressure you. They may contact a family member once to get your contact details if they cannot reach you, but they should not reveal the nature of their call. If collectors are harassing your family, this is a breach of FCA rules.

What is the best way to deal with debt collectors?

The best approach is to seek professional debt advice. Options include entering an IVA (which legally stops all contact and can write off debt), a Debt Management Plan (where your provider handles creditor communication), or negotiating directly with support. Ignoring the problem usually makes it worse.
